{"id":2239,"date":"2014-05-26T08:08:26","date_gmt":"2014-05-26T14:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chrisgrundemann.com\/?p=2239"},"modified":"2015-05-22T09:32:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T15:32:04","slug":"human-network-human-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chrisgrundemann.com\/index.php\/2014\/human-network-human-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Network, Human Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has now been about eight months since I joined the Internet Society as the Director of Deployment &amp; Operationalization and I still get asked on a fairly regular basis \u201cwhat do you do?\u201d Well, with ISOC\u2019s Chief Internet Technology Officer <a title=\"Thank You, Leslie Daigle, For All You Have Done For The Internet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/deploy360\/blog\/2014\/05\/thank-you-leslie-daigle-for-all-you-have-done-for-the-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leslie Daigle\u2019s recent departure<\/a>, and with my time here having exceeded both my first 120 days and my first 6 months, this seems like the right moment to reflect on my brief tenure here so far and perhaps pontificate a bit on where we\u2019re going \u2013 and why.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve followed me for very long, you\u2019ve probably seen my affinity for taking inventory; so let me start here with a quick accounting of these past few months:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ve flown over 90,000 miles (in coach) and visited 11 cities in 9 countries on 4 continents (<a title=\"ION Djibouti\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/deploy360\/ion\/djibouti2014\/\">ION Djibouti<\/a> will make that 100k, 12, 10, and 5 next month).<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve attended 8 NOGs, 4 RIR meetings, 2 IONs, an IETF, an ICANN, and several additional gatherings of the Internet technical communities around the world.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve visited exchange points in the Himalayas and hacker spaces in European basements.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve met billionaires and paupers, engineers and Prime Ministers, wizened pioneers and total newbs.<\/li>\n<li>In sum, I\u2019ve spoken with hundreds of people and presented to thousands more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And what have I learned? Something that Leslie knew all along <a title=\"Leslie's Farewell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/blog\/tech-matters\/2014\/05\/farewell-from-leslie\" target=\"_blank\">it seems<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Internet technology is nice, but it\u2019s the collaboration of real people that makes it work.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As an engineer and a technologist, it\u2019s easy for me to get caught up in the packets and the pipes, in the bits and the buffers, in the what, rather than the how or why.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I can\u2019t discount the importance of pure technology. Obviously we need technical solutions to technical problems. We must have interoperable standards and interconnected networks. Technology must evolve and the packets must flow!<\/p>\n<p>However I\u2019ve come to appreciate, now more than ever, that the significance of the Internet is not in the current technological methodologies, not in cloud or SDN or even in Ethernet or a specific version of the Internet Protocol; but rather in its true function: <i>to connect people<\/i> (both to each other and to the tools and information they need).<\/p>\n<p>The Internet is fundamentally a human network, and its greatest challenges are fundamentally human in nature.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which languages and character sets should we use, and what are the ramifications of localizing a global medium?<\/li>\n<li>To what extent should each service provider have control over the network they own and operate, and what responsibility do they have to their users and to the networks they interconnect with?<\/li>\n<li>How do we get \u201cbroccoli technologies\u201d (as Leslie Daigle loved to call those technologies we know are good for us but that we avoid anyway) deployed around the world?<\/li>\n<li>How do we share and record our vast tribal knowledge regarding network design and operation?<\/li>\n<li>How do we ensure that new technologies serve people, and not just machines?<\/li>\n<li>How do we connect the entire global population to one another?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Addressing the Human Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This is a moment when the ISOC Internet Technology team, the Internet technical community, and dare I say the Internet itself, will be entering a new phase of our journey together.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"Video of Geoff's talk &quot;How the Internet Changed&quot;\" href=\"https:\/\/ripe68.ripe.net\/archives\/video\/149\/\" target=\"_blank\">his talk celebrating the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of RIPE NCC<\/a> last week, Geoff Huston spoke about the Internet\u2019s role as the underdog and went on to state that \u201cwe won\u201d in the battle against OSI, against telephony, against television, radio, newspapers\u2026 The list of now legacy business models goes on.<\/p>\n<p>I think my friend and mentor Tim Denton best summed it up when he remarked that the Internet is the solution that dissolves everything it encounters; proprietary technologies, traditional business models, even legacy governance and regulatory methodologies\u2026 It\u2019s stunning when you think about it. The Internet has disrupted so much, and each time, it brings more choice, control, and communication to its users. Think of in-phone GPS navigation vs. paper maps, ride sharing vs. old-fashioned cabs, personal online shops vs. traditional brick and mortar stores. Everywhere we look, the Internet, and to a greater extent the Internet model of permissionless, bottom-up, open, and transparent innovation is beating out closed, top-down legacy models.<\/p>\n<p>Geoff went on to remark: Now that \u201cwe won,\u201d the ephemeral \u2018they\u2019 we\u2019ve been fighting against all these years \u2026 is now us. While a tad sensational, I must agree, at least to a degree. The Internet, and therefore the Internet community (because they are inexorably linked), has in many ways become the dominant system. But what does that mean? For one, now that the Internet has taken over our lives and our economies in so many ways, it means we must recognize, formalize, and evolve our institutions\u2026 It\u2019s time to grow up.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the work we\u2019re doing at the Internet Society comes in. Much like the Internet itself, I see the role of the Deployment and Operationalization team, and the broader Internet Technology team, as one of facilitating communication: Communication amongst network operators. Communication between operators and developers. Communication across communities.<\/p>\n<p>Because cooperation and coordination fuel the Internet, and the only way to them is through communication, I\u2019m proud to answer, \u201cI facilitate communication\u201d when someone asks what I do. Whether it\u2019s putting first adopters and fast followers together to discuss the real world operational impacts of implementing new and important IETF standards within <a title=\"Deploy360\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/deploy360\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Deploy360 program<\/a>; helping operator communities around the world document how to keep the Internet running smoothly through the Best Current Operational Practice (<a title=\"BCOP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/deploy360\/projects\/bcop\/\" target=\"_blank\">BCOP<\/a>) efforts we\u2019re helping to bootstrap; pushing the IETF to be more inclusive and the operators more engaged in protocol development through our newest project \u201c<a title=\"Operators and the IETF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.internetsociety.org\/deploy360\/projects\/operators-and-the-ietf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Operators and the IETF<\/a>;\u201d or even some yet-to-be-invented future effort to meet yet another community need; I\u2019m extremely proud to be able to confidently exclaim:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>I\u2019m here to help!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>But I, and the teams I\u2019m a part of, can only do so much. This evolution will take all of us working together.
